What
is Ozone and the Benefits of Ozone?
What exactly
is ozone?
Ozone is a pungent gas naturally produced in the Earth's
upper atmosphere by the action of UV sun light on oxygen
molecules. Ozone can be created for water treatment purposes
by sending air through a special chamber containing a high-voltage
"spark," which creates a blue plasma corona; it is also
produced by sending air through a chamber of ultraviolet
light.
Ozone is a gas
that nature creates in one of two ways:
- When oxygen in the air
is exposed to high intensity ultra violet rays (such
as our sun creating the ozone layer).
- When air is exposed to
a high voltage electric arc, such as lightening.
Ozone, one of
nature's basic elements, is a very powerful disinfectant
and deodorizer. It consists of oxygen (O2) with an extra
atom attached creating O3. When ozone does its job, it oxidizes
by giving up and attaching its extra atom to anything that
can be oxidized. Thus, the only by-product of ozone is oxygen.
In fact, ozone gas reverts to oxygen quite rapidly and naturally;
the half life of ozone in air is on the order of hours,
and on the order of minutes when dissolved into water.

is pH neutral.
- Dissolves over 10 times
faster into water than oxygen, then reverts to oxygen
in minutes, increasing the dissolved oxygen content
of the spa water.

Why use ozone
in water treatment or purification?
Ozone is a powerful oxidizer similar to chlorine. Many of
the same benefits we get from chlorinating water (disinfection,
oxidation of metals, etc.) is also realized by using ozone
gas, except that with ozone, there is no chemical residual
left in the water. Chlorine can combine with organic material
in water to produce toxic compounds, such as "THMs". Many
municipal water utilities have turned to ozone as a way
to disinfect with reduced THM's.
Why does a
high voltage transformer make ozone?
High voltages involve large accumulations of like electric
charges. These charges repel one another ferociously and
can leap off into the air near sharp points and edges. They
produce sparks and corona discharges. While these discharges
are useful in some devices (e.g. copiers and air cleaners),
they tend to transfer energy to air molecules and can break
up those air molecules. When normal oxygen molecules (which
each contain 2 oxygen atoms) break up, the resulting oxygen
atoms can stick to other oxygen molecules to form ozone
molecules (which each contain 3 oxygen atoms). That is why
you can often smell ozone near electrical discharges, high
voltage power lines, and after thunderstorms.
Ozone, an effective
oxidizing agent, is produced inside a sealed stainless steel
generating chamber. As air is drawn through the chamber,
molecules of oxygen recombine to create ozone. Ozone oxidizes
contaminants very quickly and leaves harmless precipitates
which are collected in the equipment filter. Ozone naturally
reverts to pure oxygen in approximately 20 minutes.
